gemstone wheatens

About Jim & Tami Herzog

Jim & TamiWe live in Elk Grove, just south of Sacramento CA. We have three grown children and one grandchild. In January 2001, we got our first Wheaten and entered the wonderful world of showing dogs. We've never looked back.

The beginning.
Our quest for a Wheaten was frustrating. The only puppies available were show quality and had to be shown. Jim and I had never been to a dog show, much less shown a dog! But, we wanted a Wheaten from a responsible breeder, so we decided to show. We asked ourselves, "How hard can it be?"  Well, with a good dog, a lot of hard work and perseverance, and a little luck ? it's not hard at all.

In January 2001, Maddie (CH Gallagher's Diamond Girl) entered our lives and set us on our way in the wonderful world of Wheatens. Despite our lack of experience, we showed Maddie to her Championship in eighteen short months. Maddie is an exceptional example of good conformation with sound temperament. She was also a great showdog, so we continued to show her as a Special with great success. Nationally ranked, she earned an invitation to the prestigious AKC Eukanuba Invitational in December 2003 where she was awarded an Award of Merit and an invitation to Crufts in England. Now retired, Maddie's job is in the whelping box but she still goes to an occasional show.

Our litters.
Maddie's first litter was born in April 2004, and eight healthy Wheaten puppies became the first Gemstone Wheatens. Thus began our journey as breeders. Two have since earned their AKC Championships – Glitter (CH Gemstone's Marquee Cut) and Laney (CH Gemstone's Diamond Chase). In Augut 2006, Glitter produced six healthy pups... and Laney became a mother in June 2007. Resting on their laurels at home is our more recent champion, Millie.

In the show ring
We are currently showing two of Laney's puppies out of Art, Raleigh and Bentley.  Our great owners, Frank & Marji Baumann, are showing the sister, Emmy, to perfection.  We're also showing George, a Glitter son.

Our newest showgirl just made her debut in June.  Allie surprised us all by winning Best of Winners at 11 months at the Southern California Specialty.  What a girl!

Life with Wheatens
Our Wheatens are loved family members that live in our household. We do a limited amount of breeding. We are active members of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Northern California and follow their Code of Ethics. Our goal as breeders is to breed with an emphasis on health and temperament while maintaining the integrity of the breed. We spend a great deal of time and thought going over pedigrees to make wise decisions in our breeding program.

If you would like to get a wheaten from us, be prepared to be patient, to be interviewed in person, and to be a part of our lives for the life of your dog. As a responsible breeder, we sell our companion dogs on spay/neuter contracts with limited AKC registration. If you are interested in entering the world of showing dogs, we will be more than happy to discuss this with you.

We hope you enjoy this site and find it helpful and informative in your quest for your Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier.

... More later. We have dogs to groom!
